Former actor Fred Paul's silent screen version of Wilde's Lady Windermere's Fan is a real historical curio. The play was the first, and most melodramatic of Wilde's four social comedies, and Benedict James's script accentuates this feature rather than the humour, adding scenes and shifting the balance of audience sympathies to emphasise the melodrama.
The cast includes popular leading man Milton Rosmer, prominent actor-manager of the period Sir Nigel Playfair, and Arthur Wontner, later to become the finest screen Sherlock Holmes until Basil Rathbone took on the mantle.
This version features a specially commissioned new music score, composed and conducted by Nicholas Brown and performed by the Triptych piano trio.
