Gunslinger Reb Kittridge rides into town expecting to take a job helping badman Matt Telford get rid of Dan Saxon, now the only other farmer in the basin. Instead the wily Saxon arranges that Kittridge become owner of his ranch, so the gunman lands up with the job of getting a cattle herd to their buyer while he fights off Telford and his men. He also has to find time to romance Saxon's pretty but independent daughter.

viewer's comments:

- Gunslinger turns cowpoke

Good shoot-em-up with Murphy as Reb Kittredge, a gunhand in between jobs. He is offered a job to run a cattleman out of the country so the evil Matt Telford can control the entire valley. In an odd turn of events Kittredge comes into ownership of the disputed acreage and begins a hazardous journey to get the bovine to market before the mortgage to Telford comes due. Of course, Telford does everything in his power to ensure the drive is unsuccessful. A side plot along the way involves Kittredge as one corner of a love triangle, pitting him against a hot headed, back shooting polecat for the love of a beautiful woman: gotta have that thrown in, eh? Pretty standard stuff, but I enjoyed the production.

- a well done sagebrush

A hired gun with principles - that is Audie's role in this affair. He is tough and will not be told what to do. He realises that the person who hired him is not only a crook but a bully determined to walk over everyone. Reb, Audie's character, refuses to be controlled and be at anyones beck and call, so decides to change sides. As usual there is the obligatory shapely woman(Susan Cabot, one of his regular leading ladies) who pretends to hate him at first but, well, you know what's going to happen. Audie puts in an assured performance here, still fairly early on in his movie career. I've read that he insisted on wearing clothes cowhands wore (including hat complete with sweat marks) in order to give realism and grit to his roles. I have to include the words I usually slip in somewhere when commenting on an Audie Murphy movie: Audie looked great!
