Robert De Niro stars in this, his second film for director Brain De Palma. Their first time together, The Wedding Party, was made before but released after Greetings in 1969. This was an exciting time for American cinema. A new generation of directors - De Palma, Scorsese, Spielberg and Coppola - were all beginning their careers, and within a few years would make their mark in a big way.
Greetings is a satirical comedy focusing on the lives of three New Yorkers, each with his own personal fixation, ranging from sex and voyeurism to Kennedy assassination theories. Their common interest is discussing ways to dodge the draft board.
De Palma's originality captures perfectly the spirit of late sixties America. And De Niro, even in this early performance, displays all the hallmarks that has earned him the reputation of 'the greatest screen actor of our age'. They would make one more film together, a sequel to Greetings called Hi Mom. Shortly after, De Palma introduced his discovery to a close friend and fellow New York filmmaker, Martin Scorsese.
