Vivid British Columbia locations, brilliantly photographed by celebrated cinematographer Robert Krasker, add impact to a powerful blend of drama and thrilling outdoors adventure.
British trapper Oliver Reed arrives at a trading post in 1850's British Columbia to sell his furs and buy a wife. Having missed the annual 'auction' of bondmaidens, he purchases mute orphan girl Rita Tushingham and drags the panic- stricken girl to his cabin in the wilderness and tries to win her affections by bullying and cajoling and, when that fails, threatening her. But she remains antagonistic and unresponsive - until she has to save his life when he is caught in one of his own traps.
Reed combines crude, brawling strength with surprising sensitivity in one of his best performances and Tushingham matches him scene for scene. Sidney Hayers' driving direction creates moving romance, high drama and searing suspense, which superbly showcases the stars.
